I believe Sylvia started out as a divorced mom in this strip (Nelson's bio dad went to parts unknown before this started) but she has since married Ben and he's moved into her house next door to her parents. The rarely seen spouse is seemingly content to stay next door to his in-laws and to have no other children besides Nelson.
I love this strip, we laugh about it daily as it reminds us of our parents, and more increasingly...sigh.. of ourselves :)
