"And by 'share the road' I mean that I'm going to ride in the middle of the lane and hold up 27 cars!"
I say make the b@st@rds ride on the LEFT-hand side of the road; that'll make them a lot more conscious of motorists.
There are not many cyclists in western North Dakota but when I lived in San Diego, I find cyclists some of the most arrogant snots ever! I used to have a little beach cruiser and would take it down to this little area known for cycling and leisure biking. A group of H A R D C O R E cyclists came by and one of the dirtbags starting making fun of my "old school bike" and why wasn't I going faster? About 5 mins later I heard a loud POP! ahead of me and here that same dirtbag cyclist had blown a tire and falled off his bike. His friends left him behind and he was trying to fix his bike tire. I cruised by and said "Mine might be old school but mine didn't blow a tire". Then I said I found his bike shorts obscene and obviously he was compensating for something by making fun of others. He tried to throw a rock at me and I just rode off. KARMA!!!
Sorry. The machine acted up. I agree with you. We just got bike lanes recently where i live and cyclists seem to prefer the pedestrian pavements on the other side of the street. Consistently. In large numbers.
Celinemread, although I used to live in Cambridge rather than Oxford I had a pretty similar experience of some of the (other) cyclists- Aside from the fact that they used to ride in pedestrianised areas despite signs saying not to, quite a few would ignore red lights and ride straight through crowds of students trying to cross the road to get to their next lectures.
I cycle to work but don't feel healthily superior to anyone else- I wouldn't bother if the bus ride wasn't almost as long and a lot less reliable than going on my bike is.
