In my part of the US, Faulkner was generally not assigned to high school students. I've read very little of his work, but I do like the quote from one of his works, "The past isn't dead. The past isn't even PAST."
We carry our past with us always, for better or worse.
It don't matter where it was, just so you remember it and ain't ashamed of it. Because one place to start from is just as important as any other. You're a country boy; all you know is that patch up there in Mississippi where you started from. But thats all right too.

It's a great book if you can follow stream of consciousness. The entire series of Faulkner books tells the history of one family and it is truly exciting.
