Good research, lifestudent! When I first read this back in the day, my thought was that he was referencing JD Salinger's "Catcher in the Rye," whose main character, Holden Caulfield, references this poem. Knowing Schulz, perhaps both............... Allan Sherman referenced this line in one of his early song parodies. On the LP, My Son, the Celebrity, he has a song called !$%*!$%* of One, Half Dozen of the other." The song has one or two parody lines from a number of popular or folks songs, including this: "Deli Man do not be stingy / Pile the cold cuts high! / Customers should see salami / Coming through the rye!"

It's from a poem by Robert Burns. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comin%27_Through_the_Rye

I find this Hystarical, but I'd apreciate it if someone would tell me what Linus is talking about.
