JMHO, but I think this strip could be interpreted that Schroeder hates himself because he was born in the wrong era - notice focus on the years of Beethoven's life. He wishes he was Beethoven's contemporary, perhaps? Or alternately, that he is doing an 'upward comparison' of himself to Beethoven, that he feels so insignificant.

I joined just to comment on this. I forgot Beethoven's birthday too and feel horrible about it.

Did you read yesterday's strip? Schroeder had forgotten Beethoven's birthday, which he celebrates every year. That's why he says "I hate myself".

I don't get it either.

Doesn't EVERY city have a statue to Beethoven?
