In philosophy this argument is known as Pascal's Wager, his argument for acting as if there is a God whether there is one or not. One fallacy is in thinking that belief in the supernatural doesn't come with a cost, whether in psychological well-being or endless murder in God's name. The more fundamental error is in believing that simply believing can make something true, otherwise known as faith. Sorry to get so heavy here, but it has to be said.
