Just remember folks we come here to have an intelligent commentary on the strips we read. Saturday is Independence Day a day to Remind us of the Freedoms we have-and not abuse. I read one flickr and found it to be the disgusting work of one Richard Cranium (think on that) YES, We DO have Freedom of speech, but must put Intellect into that speech and not use it to take someone else's work & Deface it.=======Thats MAD magazine's Job.

This has taken on the feel of a masquerade ball gone bad. The parents came home and threw every one out of the house at 9 CWL. So the party migrated to LUANN's house. What an interesting analogue. Tiff's wearing a short skirt again, Gunther must be nearby mopping up -- or worse.

soleil, Adam's friend reposted the links here yesterday for both the 9CWL and Luann pirated strips so we got "linked". His comics.com account has been closed. Apparently there were also a lot of abusive posts outside of that on the 9CWL board, so the "polluted waters" were flushed.

Seems slightly unfair to hijack Luann for 9CWL discussion...I tried to read it on (collective) your recommendations, but have to admit we just didn't click (c'est la vie? DOH! I spoke French!)... BUT...I didn't think it would take long for Adam's posts to be shut down -- and his silence of late leads me to believe he's been banned/account closed/insert choice of verbage for kicked to the curb. Not because of the language and jokes (which were mildly amusing once, but just adolescent and obnoxious after that) -- but because it was an exact copy of copyrighted material -- including the signatures, for heaven's sake! Seems to me it would have been more logical to have shut down that poster rather than closing the pool for everyone, but it's Brooke's work and Brooke's right to shut it off....just seems it's a bit extreme, and eliminates talk by genuine fans. I'm hoping Greg is a bit more forgiving.

Wow. This storyline is just moving right along. I guess we won't be reading about "the perfect love" for quite a while. Bummer.

Ridley said : "Hi Claude et al... I don't believe that Adam is reaping any financial benefit from his strips, nor do I think he is legally liable." ### Well, we disagree here. I do NOT think "financial benefit" matters, maybe Adam only wants to build a following of attractive nubile groupies. Same bad thingie, different motive, still not acceptable social activity. ### Adam published it with a clearly copied drawing. It had BROOKE's signature on it, but the words were changed. If I had taken YOUR original post here, changed your words to say "I (Ridley) am a totally incompetent bozo, and stick forks into helpless small amphibians for fun.", but left YOUR signature on it, you might be miffed as well. ### Ridley said : "Brooke has his strips published on the internet, into the public domain. ### Disagree. I find no difference between publishing my original creative content on the Internet, and publishing it in a newspaper. ### Ridley said : "Check out the laws regarding parody." ### No. YOU check out the laws regarding forgery. If I took an EXACT copy of your checkbook where you had pre-signed one check and made that check out to myself, AGAIN I think you might be miffed. That is NOT "parody". ### Ridley said : "As many of you out there always say...if you don't like it, don't read it!". ### True that. And I DON'T "read it". I did read the first strip Adam posted the link to on 9CL forum, and said "This ain't right". I have NOT been back for more of his work since. ### Have fun out there, y'all :)

Theft of intellectual or artistic property is very serious. Libel of same is possibly more so. In order to qualify as Satire such parody must attain a certain level of competence--cf. THE WIND DONE GONE. In the '70s when the Air Pirates Underground Comics Collective appropriated Disney Co.'s cartoon images for a series of very raunchy tales Disney sued and won. The suit severely impacted the career and marriage of Bobby London. He had never personally used any Disney images--his characters were a tribute to G. Herriman and POPEYE'S Segar. http://tinyurl.com/dbrv6q _________________________________________________________________________________ Ask ANY craftsman-toymaker how he or she feels about the Big Guys stealing their ideas. One member of the Ky. Guild developed a series of soft sculpture dolls and had the particular idea of issuing adoption papers with their sale. When the Cabbage Patch lot came out she sued and won a big settlement.

Cubs beat the Brewers 9-5 last night. Derrek Lee had a grand slam and a three run homer for a total of seven rbi's.

Anyway, it's been about 40 hours since I was in bed, so I am going home now and have some dinner with some sparkling red wine. It has been a reasonably productive and most interesting day and a half in this realm. I hope Adam and Co bugger off until they have their crania extracted from their respective coights. Another bit of relevant Strine.

Ridley, this site isn't "public domain" - like much of the internet, it's privately owned and operated. The government can't interfere with your freedom of speech, but comics.com and other forums where you post most certainly can if they choose to. And copyright laws still apply - you don't have to profit in order to violate them. Parody is one thing - in art, you can freehand copy any image copyrighted image ONCE without violating it, but you can't reproduce that effort. Copyright law prohibits the substantial use of a copyrighted work without permission of the copyright owner - there is no parody "law" that protects you. You have to prove "fair use" and the criteria are pretty stringent.
