The word that got auto-bleeped was "sǝɹoɥʍ-uoıʇuǝʇʇɐ". And as for Luann, I've always loved Greg's work and appreciate the messages that he tries to work into his strip.
razorabck2824, you said "Looking at the Pibgorn page, dissent is not tolerated there either." That's simply not true. I've seen many folks come and go - people who either didn't "get" Brooke's work, or found it irrelevant, or boring, or repetitive, or you name it. They stated their opinions and the response from the other folks there has almost always been, "Gee, sorry you don't like the strip." What we _don't_ tolerate is abusive trolls and !$%*!$%*!$%*!$%* who are simply out to stir up trouble. There's a huge difference between saying "This strip is not my cup of tea" and "You people are a bunch of pathetic losers who have no life," and then sticking around to escalate when folks take umbrage. There's no point in hanging around a group of people whose ideas you don't agree with, unless you're just in it for the lulz, a concept which most people outside of /b/ tend to disagree with.
Curlyfries, I just hope that Greg does not mind the traffic here which is unrelated to his strip. I have only read 2 pages of today's comments (there are currently 4 more) and it is late, but I just want to say that I totally understand why Brooke (while doing 2 daily cartoons) does not want to be expected to sort through all the posters on his comments to see WHO needs to be blocked. I (personally) did NOT like the one posting by Adam which I DID check out, so ignored the subsequent ones. His use of the original art without permission was definitely a copyright violation (this is not the Dilbert site which encourages alternate words- and even THEY would censure some of what I imagine Adam would write). I think that Adam, MJB and some others stepped too far over the line. So I just hope that eventually we can all get back to that appreciation of felinity, femininity and HUMANITY!
And on the Luann strip; I know that this smart Aussie will be able to see Tiff as a “Lofty” (best I could do in a brief search online for Australian meanings=foolish person). If he IS looking for company, he can do better with ANYONE else.
To Soleil and Curlyfries (or should that be "Curlyfrites?") The Belgians also got credit for "Belgian Waffles," "Brussel Sprouts," and Jean Claude Von Damme. My favorite French musician, Francoiz Breut (from Normandie, I believe?) is not Belgian, but she is currently living in Brussels. Given the choices of those four, I would pick Francoiz on a Belgian Waffle any day of the week. Even if the waffles were not available, the dish would be very tasty... ;)
susan, in the immortal words of J. ALfred Prufrock, "That is not what I meant, at all". No, wait - maybe it was Alfred E. Neuman. Well, one of those guys, at any rate. I hate it when somebody misunderstands me, so I hardly think explaining what you meant is egocentric. IMO, it's no fun being TD'd ASAP by people who are PO'd for the wrong reason. QED. **** I don't think the tone of people who thought the copyright piracy was unfair were so "high-minded", my take was that they were just cognizant that there wasn't a good defense for it. But if I thought I was being taken to task for that I'd probably read it that way, too! **** I'm with razorabck, shutting down comments altogether when you have the means to block urls and pirate accounts DOES look like pettiness because you didn't receive enough billet-doux. Censorship like that always punishes more good people than bad. I think a good board usually finds the means to smack a troll, one way or another. It may be messy and the dainty will flee the scene first, but it's also like real life in that mommy ain't always there to protect you.
To the followers of Luann, I would like to apolgize for stepping into your commentary to speak to my fellow commentators of 9CWL. To Cat43, Claude WondrCat and the others I can't recall right now, I enjoyed and learnt many things from your responses and perhaps in the future we may resume again around Chickweed Pond. I never bothered to look into Adam's 'work' for I had a pretty good idea it was twisted plagarism and I was at 9CWL for Brooke's creativity. I know we used to try to guess BMcE's next move but I know how hurtful it is to see your creations stolen or even worse cheapened. In my case a 13 piece salad bowl set with matching wooden serving set and individual forks. It took 2 years to just gather the burls and the people removed my name, stained it (blasphemy!), and sold it as their work. Anyway perhaps comics.com will do something to prevent this "stench" as B described it, from happening again. From Wifey and I-peace to you.
Just send the guy an e-mail or letter threatening to sic the syndicate's lawyers on him and he'll back down. Locking the ratings system and comments board makes it look like Brooke threw a hissy fit because every comment wasn't dripping with praise. Looking at the Pibgorn page, dissent is not tolerated there either. If there really are mods at comics.com, why haven't they taken out the troll at Arlo & Janis?////As for today's comic, looks like Tiffany's found another Miguel for the school year. So why do I think things will go differently than last time?
Aw Curly -- Thanks. And gosh -- I don't want anyone to think I'm so ego-centric as to bbelieve all th e posts abt copyright had anything to do with ME. I'm nt even here that often, and I MUCH prefer light-hearted banter. But I made the misunderstood comment about the silliness of closing the board, plus a couple of unrelated flippant remarks, went to bed, and then somebody posted a strong rebuttal of my "defense" of Adam. So when I woke up today every single thing I'd said before had been massively TD'ed -- I mean deep in troll territory... so I figured it was retribution. AND everyone was high-mindedly discussing artistic violation. It all seemed so weird..... Now some of the TD's have even been reversed by later comers -- and I gotta get back to work! And enough about this!
susan s., I never thought you were defending AdamHosk at all, the td-ers clearly didn't get what you meant by "silly". Copyright violation/signature never occured to me, duh - and I bet it didn't occur to others either. The two strips I saw at the other site seemed mild compared the ones Adam "redid" here - some made me laugh, some didn't. Like you, I figured to each his own so I didn't get the vehemence with which McE. pulled the plug. I think if there hadn't been numerous abusive posts it would still be up, but the piracy issue was just the last straw. But since he'd shut down the pirate account as he had a perfect right to do, I still think it was a draconian move to tank the board - it no doubt delighted the trolls as that's the equivalent of a Nobel Prize for Achievement. Adam's friend's post here was removed, so effective monitoring IS possible, right? **** I also don't think the copyright-defending posts this AM were directed at you but were instead debating the legality of it with those who were defending Adam's "right" to post his pirated strips. And yes, I still think you're a lady.
