Well, that was predictable! Anyone who wants to keep politics out of an otherwise great comic strip is immediately branded a knuckle-dragging "racist." Which, of course, is ITSELF an extremely narrow-minded statement. Just the fact that the only two criteria mentioned here is that he's young and "handsome" (and that somehow, his youth and looks should raise one's level of hope and enthusiasm -- nevermind his QUALIFICATIONS) speaks volumes about the mindset of those who are giving the thumbs-down to those who want to keep politics out of the comics. What a joke.
I felt the same way with Ben -- I just didn't want current politics to intrude on this strip. It has the effect of mentally knocking me out of the comics page and back onto Page 1 News again, and it ruins my enjoyment of what is otherwise a very good strip. Fortunately, Greg didn't bring too much politics into the Ben storyline, other than to appreciate Ben's service (which I think, regardless of where you stand on the war, is something anyone can appreciate). As for my political stance, I think Bush is a royal screw-up, I did not like McLame/Palin and I absolutely can't stand Obama. I just want the non-Editorial comics to remain apolitical. It's why I stopped reading Bizarro -- it starting making too many political statements.
Please keep politics out of Luann.
Well, this 37-year-old white girl is going to DC with her 39-year-old white husband (we live in New Mexico). This isn't just about race. It's about the thrill of having someone in charge who uses reality to direct his decision-making. It's about the relief of knowing we will soon have a president who acts, rather than reacts.
I didn't realize how many racists read Luann. Why don't you just drag your knuckles back under the rock you came from.
The election of a handsome young president has raised the level of hope and enthusiasm among all those young and old, black and white.
Delta has the right to be proud not just of the president elect, but also of those who elected him.
The same was true with the election of JFK nearly 50 years ago.
Today's comments are funnier than today's strip. Keep politics out, they gibber. It's funny how I can't remember all these same people complaining about Ben the Hero on duty in Iraq. I hope the girls make it to D.C. Delta should be in line for a political appointment.
Greg,
I applaud you for setting the stage for a story line concerning Delta visiting Washington DC. If I may be so bold, I would appreciate it if you include a visit with her congressional representative’s office during the story arc. It would give a positive message to your audience; congresspersons are approachable and the regular constituents can provide valuable input to public policy.
I have always included visits to members offices when I go to DC, a tradition I intend to continue when my wife and I are there for the 4th of July.
Luann's still wanting to visit her first crush, Aaron Hill, I bet. I don't think she'll do it since it's been done already. Is Bernice thinking about graduation? That would be cool since the series has never dealt with college at all since Brad only went to firefighting courses. I wonder if Delta is being whimsical like Luann or if she is actually planning to go.
