Maybe school newspaper staff budgets have changed since I was in high school, but I don't recall us ever going to DC to cover an inauguration. 'Course, she could pay for the trip with her own money (um, her allowance?), or maybe her parents are paying for the trip. Hmmm...it doesn't seem like a slam-dunk of logic to me to say that she's "obviously" going to DC because she's a high school newspaper editor. Again, we shall see.
And has anyone ever thought about the creation of Delta, the character, in the first place? An African-American girl who is much more mature, intelligent, aware of the world, and involved with social (mostly Democratic) causes than her white friends. People here say, "well, this makes sense because it falls right in line with Delta's character." Yes, it does, and I think that that is the reason that this character was created in the first place. Not that I have anything against intelligent, involved African-Americans (I'm one), but I do have something against inserting such a character into a comic strip as a vehicle to express political motives. I don't know if Greg is doing this, but I hope not. Luann is too good a strip for that.
I don't really mind referances to politics in Luann but I don't want it to be a plot. Basically referances like this are cool but if they actually went to DC and met the president it would be very far-fetched especially since I don't think Luann and her friends aren't old enough to vote. But yes, I will agree with DarkEyes politics in Luann when over-done isn't a good idea, if they do it in moderation (like Brad being a firefighter or Ben's service) without getting too into the issue I'm good.
HIYAW! PEOPLE-PEOPLE-PEOPLE! Come on THINK! Delta is the EDITOR of the school Newspaper....And,like it or not, there is something Hysterica...sorry HISTORICAL about to occur in Our Nation's Capitol and being a good journalist Delta would be a FOOL not to cover this. Presently I do not believe Mr. Evans is being Political-no more than when Luann wore
a 911 sweater while hanging out the American Flag on Thanksgiving, or corresponded with Ben in Iraq(or was it Afganistan)This is keeping with the characters personas. I LUV LUANN.
The more complaints, the better the strip, huh? By that strange logic, Cathy, The Born Loser, Marmaduke and the Wizard of Id are brilliant masterpieces, judging by the number of people who think that these strips totally suck eggs. I would be willing to bet that if Greg Evans were to, say, take Luann in a new direction that ran completely counter to your political, moral, ethical sensibilities, you would have a different definition of "success" than you proclaim here.
That aside, we shall see just how much personal politics are injected into this strip in the coming days, as Delta's story unfolds. Will the "current event" be covered from both sides of the fence, or will it just serve to be another glowing halo placed over O's head? We shall see.
DarkEyes, I don't look at it as injecting personal politics. It's merely recognizing current events.
At any rate, judging by the comments here, Greg has done an excellent job. You always know you succeed with something in this field when people complain about it.
I'm not a racist and if Obama stood where I stand on the issues it wouldn't bother me one bit that he's black. I have voted for black candidates before when they stand where I do on the issues. But Obama is for everything I'm against and against everything I'm for, therefore I do not support his presidency, I did not vote for him or McClain but for someone who does stand on the issues as I do, Chuck Baldwin of the Constitution party. I think Obama is going to be bad for America.
Hee, maybe, just maybe it has nothing to do with politics. Maybe she would like to go see the nations capitol. I went last year and it was a fantastic experience. And then why Delta, cause she has always been the one that want to get out and do something to further her mind and her experiences.
I did consider that possibility -- and you're right, Delta has always been the one who has been the most socially conscious and active -- but still, this seems too cliched and obvious.
Regardless of whom he might have sent to DC instead, I don't want him sending anyone to DC. Injecting personal politics into your strip, no matter what those politics may be, will always result in a thumbs-down from me. (Unless that is one of the main purposes of the strip, of course -- such as Doonesbury or Mallard Fillmore.)
I'm black (hence the nickname DarkEyes) and I don't want overt racial issues or politics injected into any family strip. I get enough of that from the other sections of the paper.
DarkEyes, that's a very simple question to answer. Why Delta? Of the three girls, she happens to be the one who pays attention to world events, supports progressive causes, and doesn't get quite as caught up in what teenagers are "supposed to do." Delta's personality has been like that in this strip long before Obama came to any prominence.
And tell me something else: Why is it that Greg chose to have Delta be the one who wants to go to DC? Why not Bernice or Luann? Don't tell me it didn't cross his mind that Delta is African-American when he chose her as the one who will go to DC to see The One sworn in.
Greg, sadly, is the one who injected race into the strip here, as well as politics. For all of their supposed color-blindness, these "progressives" are pretty predictable when it comes right down to it.
