Mallett lives in Lansing, Mich., with his wife, Patty, too many pets and about as many bicycles. Mallett learned to read at an early age by poring over the comics, and he never lost interest in them. He taught himself to draw and paid attention to people who could write. While he was in high school, he produced a daily comic strip for his local newspaper, the Big Rapids, Mich., Pioneer. He left nursing school to work for The Grand Rapids Press and Flint Journal, and then for their capital bureau in Lansing as an art director, graphic artist, photo editor, copy editor and editorial cartoonist. He has raced bicycles and competed in triathlons, flown hang gliders and airplanes, studied fine art and great writing. He wrote and illustrated the children's book Dangerous Dan, and has illustrated books for other authors, including best-seller Mitch Albom. He continues to have a difficult time sitting still.
