On a lighter note, Arlo does not strike me as the type to let a crowd get in the way of enjoying a good fireworks display. He strikes me as the type who would climb up on the roof to get a better view.

I don't see how, if you're close enough to hear 'em, you wouldn't want to just walk to see the fireworks, and avoid the traffic jam. Anyway, I wouldn't be able to stay away....

Mojito & Soleil - I heard "food coma" one time, somewhere but I don't remember where. So it is up for grabs as it is not my original work. I use it at family reunions, Christmas, especially Thanksgiving, Easter, anywhere my large Irish/German family is eating. I grew up attending Luthern church (I don't attend church now) and Lutherns are notorious for having a potluck for anything and everything. You can't leave the church unless you have a coffee in one hand and some baked goods in the other. So I grew up learning to eat like a champ and the funny thing is - My family are smaller, very slender built people who look like they eat nothing but tofu and celery. Good genetics I guess.

Hedgewitch, I might need to borrow the term "food coma".

Janis does not look amused. I try to never miss the 4th of July fireworks here. I'm a grown woman, mother and wife but I still love things that go BOOM! My kid was so tired last night she slept right through them, even though we were just a few blocks away from where they were setting them off. Hope everyone had a good 4th of July and a relaxing 5th of July (the day of nursing one's hangover or in my case, a food coma).

As one of the 300 million Americans who celebrated our Independence Day, I found Mr. Johnson’s “joke” very funny and very true. Of course, those in Europe who might find the “joke” weak probably don’t understand that one of the high points of OUR 4th of July celebration besides the sleeping in, picnics, going to the beach, family reunions and cook-outs is the nighttime fireworks. However, fighting the crowds, finding the perfect spot to observe the show and then fighting the departing crowds sometimes just isn’t worth the hassle. Arlo is using the theater of his mind to imagine the fireworks show based on the sounds he hears. Those who live in France will get a chance to do the same thing on the 14th of this month assuming they have enough imagination to enjoy the non-obvious. As for what now is turning into a flame war, I would urge all to just put it on “ignore.” Actions speak loud than words. I will act when (and if) I am served, but until then I am enjoying a wonderfully written comic about an American couple enjoying their lives and each other.

I was gonna post about identifying with Arlo in this one because I get claustrophobic in crowds, but I seem to have come in on another daily flame war. >:-(
