Hedgewitch, looking back at your post on the first page, refer to that as 'chumming the waters', a practice that comes from ocean fishing. I'm fortunate that I don't get seasick. The biggest waves I've had to contend with were *only* about 2', but that was on a 22' pontoon. Believe me, you get turned sideways in that and it can get hairy.
Having been a lurker on various forums for several years, I'd like to add my first comment to this one. I've owned a 41' sailboat for ten years now, and lived on board part time for three years. It is indeed a hole in the water into which you pour money, but living in southern California, I think its better than earthquake insurance. Living on board in a marina is like living in a huge appartment complex, with only 10 percent of the units occupied. If Gene were to move aboard, there could be some great memories to recall later in life. Gene could also spend many hours helping to maintain such an old wooden boat. Personally I prefer the "Classic Plastic" or "Tuperware" as my boat is sometimes referred to. So far this has been a great story line, and one of my favorites next to 9CWL and Pibgorn.
Janis did almost get swept away to Margaritaville, years ago when a coworker was selling a boat, they went to go look at it, She was against it, but when they got on board she got swept up in it and got a little carried away. I think it was shortly after she got shorter hair, I don't feel like going through all the archives now
Maybe she gardens because she's never been sailing...and believe it or not, lots of people have pots of flowers on the dock. Dont know if it will happen or not...just saying.
Soleil and MarleneO, isn't Janis's hobby gardening? I think there's some incompatibility here - someone's gonna have to give. Or would a rototiller would look nice on the aft deck?
Josepheh, that was most eloquent and beautifully stated. Single mothers aren't pets looking to taken into anyone's home, but if you see or know them as actual people who take responsibility for their choices and contribute to society, that endangers that rigid stereotype. What I find extremely interesting in all this ongoing tidal wave of condemnation is no mention whatsoever of those who impregnated all these post-partum man-traps in the first place. Last time I looked it took two to tango, not one.
Having spent a considerable part of my life on sailboats, here's a novel concept....what if Arlo takes Janice for a sail -- and she LIKES it? I've seen it happen plenty of times...it's entirely possible that the next chapter of their lives as empty-nesters is to be written afloat. I grew up in a house with the grass a little unkempt and the windows a little bit dirty (don't get me wrong -- we kept within a respectable distance of the Joneses, even if we didn't completely keep up!) because our every waking moment in the summer months was spent on the boat. It just becomes Stedda...stedda going to a movie, we go work on the boat...stedda going to the beach, we go for a sail...and god knows, owning a boat does NOT mean you're rich, by any stretch of a wild imagination.
Pesky website, and apologies for double posts. Apparently the word that begins with the same five letter as CIRCUs, then M, ands with STANCES is unsuitable for public discourse and must be masked. Much worse than than that word that ends the strip up there :-P
