Mojitobaby, Sloop John B works for me. I can hardly wait to see how this series turns out. Jimmy's thrown in a few unexpected twists this time...like the lust of Arlo's life.
Mietz, I'm guessing that the standing rigging falls to 'artistic license' -- Jimmy knows it's supposed to be there, but it's a pain to draw it all, and it ends up being a lot of visual clutter. There's no horizon, waves, or clouds behind Arlo and Gus, either --- same idea, I'd bet.
I beleive the gaff rigged schooner is the most beautiful thing on water. ----- Where is the standing rigging? Both views of the boat show no rigging. ----- To finish this picture, we need a club footed jib. And a fisherman to fly outside.
I'm thinking Arlo's new theme song might be Buffett's "Cheeseburger in Paradise".
I found a funny article titled "The Village Idiot - The Jerks of the Online Forum". Link is below.

If I had to guess, I'd say that Arlo, having the sailing fantasies that he does, is off to collar Gene and get him the heck out of there, pronto. I would further guess that he is probably projecting his sailing fantasies onto Gene, thinking that Gene will use the opportunity to buy the boat and head off to some Margaritaville or another...... or maybe he just went to get his check book. Either way.
Lifestudent- what, no "Sloop John B" and "Southern Cross"? ;) I think you and soleil are right on the money about Buffet, that mellowness is Arlo all over. Chairman Celine, you've offically lost it - Mao is the father of PC and you have now become the thing you profess to despise. Poor Jimmy Johnson has apparently breached so many Comics Canons in his efforts to amuse us I'm surprised he's allowed to publish the strip at all. I fear for the safety of 'Zits' and '9 Chickweed Lane' in the New Celinist Order of Things, I really do. Then again, everyone does all sorts of outrageous things nowadays, like spending their time doing what pleases them - just as you do. The rest of us just don't have a frantic need to prove our superiority by trumpeting the virtuousness of our particular schedules. Get help, get lost or simply get a life - I really don't care which. I'm adjusting my settings to "ignore" where you're concerned, it's just all white noise.
Scott, not sure what the backhand is for -- and I can't believe I'm defending Celine on this one....but neither of us are French. I'm as red-blooded American as you are. (I should suck it for Jimmy Buffett lyrics? Really?)
Well, it is nice to know that I can officially ignore anything Celine types as pure gibberish.
Most, if not all, followers of A&J know the backstory of the characters. The Mary Lou arc is the first and only recurring theme (if you don't count all of the Ludwig-centered strips). If you go to arloandjanis.com you can actually see Jimmy Johnson's thought process as to why he draws certain themes. Comparing to the rest of the comics she listed is completely missing the point.
My final rebuttal to Celine--you are free to have your own thoughts and opinions, just as I am allowed mine, just don't throw them in my face and force me to accept your point-of-view and I will do the same. You can debate and rebut, but sinking to insults to make your point shows your true character.
You know, a former "neighbor" of France's once tried to force his own opinions on others and look where that got the world.
